This Chart of Famous Eyewear is amazing—I think even those of you with perfect eyesight will agree—and the literary world is well-represented by the frames of, respectively, Hunter S. Thompson, Harry Potter, and Dolores Haze. But whither the greatest literary glasses of all time, the all-seeing specs of Dr. T. J. Eckleburg???

Have you heard about the physician shortage? Well that is potentially going to get worse. The new budget proposed by the government has $11 billion in cuts to graduate medical education (GME) - this is the money that goes to actually training doctors during residency. That, plus the threat that we will hit the debt ceiling again in November is causing a lot of worry in the world of medicine. Not to mention the amount of people that will be getting health insurance and needing a doctor in the next year. Please, if you can spare a moment, help take action to prevent this. Here is a website where you can learn more about this problem and sign a letter that will go to your state’s representatives. Please reblog, email, and pass this on to friends and family. This is an issue that can be very bad for the health of America.

Government: Too many American people don’t have health insurance! Let’s fix that.

People: Yay!

Doctors: Yay!

Government: And since doctors are greedy bastards, let’s keep regulating insurance reimbursement at rates which don’t actually pay enough for doctors’ offices to stay in business!

People: Yay!

Doctors: Oh this again.

Government: And we’ll force the doctors to all begin using poorly-designed EMR computer software or be heavily penalized, thus driving many experienced doctors right out of the practice, since younger doctors are more skilled at using computers.

People: Yay!

Doctors: Frickin’ awesome…

Government: And now let’s save even MORE money by cutting funding for the programs that create those new doctors who know how to use the computer programs — while failing to address the massive amounts of educational debt which those doctors will carry for the first 20-30 years of their practice!

People: Yay!

Doctors: …

People: Hey… where’d all the doctors go? We’ve got insurance now!

This is almost too cute for me. The fright in their eyes makes it all better.
